When the City of Omaha decided to build a new downtown baseball stadium to host the College World Series, it determined to demolish Rosenblatt Stadium, the former home of the CWS and the then-Omaha Royals, the Triple-A minor league affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. The Omaha Royals needed a new home, and after assisting the team and community stakeholders with assessments and concept designs for potential new locations, a suburban site in Sarpy County—part of the Greater Omaha metro area—was chosen as the setting for the rebranded Omaha Storm Chasers’ new home at Werner Park.
Our design for the facility fulfills the Storm Chasers’ and Sarpy County’s goal to create a more intimate environment than Rosenblatt Stadium could provide nearer its core suburban fan base of young families. As part of a planned mixed-use development, the ballpark is intended anchor a mixture of future hospitality, retail, office, residential, and recreational uses within an atmosphere that provides an unparalleled fan experience. Werner Park features 6,354 fixed seats, while berm seating wraps around the outfield, and additional standing room and specialty areas scattered throughout the ballpark bring the total capacity to 9,000. In addition to numerous fan-friendly features such as multiple picnic areas, whiffle ball field, basketball court and carousel, premium amenities are provided for by fourteen suites and a VIP Club that offer incredible views of the action located only fifteen rows from the playing field.
