Sara Cheikelard to Present on Pandemic Impacts to Healthcare Design

Join our team at the upcoming North Carolina Hospital Engineers Association’s 72nd Annual Conference and Exhibition in Wilmington, North Carolina. Senior Associate and Healthcare Project Manager Sara Cheikelard, AIA, EDAC, will present a session titled “UNC Health Blue Ridge Morganton Pavilion – Design & Construction on a Pandemic Timeline.” The UNC Health Blue Ridge Morganton Pavilion Bedtower Addition project, which spanned the entirety of the COVID-19 pandemic, faced significant challenges as unprecedented conditions evolved into critical design parameters.

Learning outcomes include:

  • Understanding the ramifications of the pandemic, their incorporation into a design, and the impacts on construction.
  • Determining options for including pandemic precautions into design.
  • Learning strategies for creating flexibility in a facility to support a changing healthcare environment, including incorporating design elements that provide respite for staff and encourage staff retention.
  • Understanding the post-pandemic market challenges and strategies for combating them.

Sara will be accompanied by Eli Powell, Assistant Vice President and Project Manager at WSP, Deanne Avery, Director of Capital Projects, Planning, Design & Construction at UNC Health Blue Ridge, and Tucker Craig, Operations Manager at Brasfield & Gorrie.

Sara’s session will be held on the third day of the conference, Thursday, August 8.
