2022 Merit Award
Semillas y Raices was recognized by Architecture at Zero with a 2022 Merit Award. The annual design competition focuses on decarbonization, equity, and resilience efforts in California. This year’s participants were asked to develop affordable housing designs for farmworker families in Visalia, California, one of the world’s most productive farming regions.
Our design establishes a single level amenity-rich pedestrian armature that becomes the connective tissue within the community. The gateway to the project is flanked by a mercado and restaurant that provide food resources and convenience to residents. This public paseo is anchored by activities that transcends language-abilities and welcomes the community to interact with the residents.
Architecture at Zero Design Competition
The Architecture at Zero competition was created in 2010 as a response to the zero net energy targets set out by the California Public Utility Commission.
