Pioneer Middle School has been recognized by the National School Boards Association for its innovative model of engaging students in learning through a sustainable, technologically advanced, built environment.
DLR Group's design interweaves traditional curriculum, sustainable principles, and active building systems to create a school that is a learning tool. The design team worked closely with teachers to identify learning concepts related to the school curriculum that could be expressed as design elements. In this process, curriculum informed design which in turn informed curriculum. The result is a sustainable environment infused with teaching and learning opportunities from the mathematics of its structural timbers to the acoustics of its music room tambourines.
